Welcome to Drone Videography 101!

My name is Mark Laymon, I am a certified drone pilot under the FAA’s Small UAS Rule (Part 107). The Remote Pilot Certificate demonstrates that I understand the regulations, operating requirements, and procedures for safely flying drones. I am a Florida resident and have traveled most of the United States and parts of Canada. Traveling has inspired me to create several companies over the years. Creating such companies allows me to create content that I can share vicariously with my friends and family. Sharing my drone videos lets my viewers see an alternative perspective on the world around us.

Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate and TRUST

Before you make money with your drone you must acquire a Remote Pilot Certificate! I trained for my Remote Pilot Certificate at Pilot Institute. Their course was very enjoyable and easy to follow. It was packed with little snippets of content that you don’t find in the books. Without the training I would not have scored as high as I did. Pilot Institute also has information on the TRUST program. TRUST is a collaboration between the FAA and industry to provide TRUST and educational safety material to Recreational Flyers. I recommend that you start with the TRUST program, then move toward your Remote Pilot Certificate. Although you cannot make money under the TRUST program, you can start getting flight time as a Recreational Flyer. Keep it legal. Do the TRUST program. https://trust.pilotinstitute.com

Vertical Drone Videography

I created the Drone Videography 101 Course on this website, to help fellow Remote Pilots find information on creating awesome Drone Videos. Plus, I wanted to cover the niche of Vertical Drone Videography, as I had not found it readily available. With the explosion of short form content that is being created, I wanted to also begin producing content that has become ever so prominent. Since the majority of the content being produced is being watched from a smart device, the demand for Vertical Video is going to grow over the next few years. With the increasing popularity of vertical video, it’s important for drone pilots to have a good understanding of how to create high-quality content in this format.

Drone Videography 101 will be a Living Course

Creating a course for the Drone Videography Industry entails that the course must be a Living Course. It must be able to be updated as the industry changes. My goal is to update the course as the industry moves. An example is the addition of the DJI Mini 3 and the DJI Mini 3 Pro. Although the DJI Mavic Pro can also produce vertical video, it is an outdated drone. Please note that you can create vertical video in most of today’s video editors, the DJI Mini 3 drones make it much easier to start.
